Seasonal Affective Disorder: A Timely Approach

Seasons bring us happiness, joy and reasons to celebrate Christmas. Seasons reflect particular nature of the time of year and other things surrounding it. We all have our favorite seasons and days of the week. We all are aware of the situation that certain type of diseases becomes more harmful with changing climate. However what might not have been made clear to us is the existence of Seasonal affective disorder. Definitely, winter period is the focus of our subject. It is also known as winter blues or winter depression. Medical studies claim that few of us start showing symptoms of depression in the winter than any other season. People in question might feel low on energy or may like to sleep more than what is being considered as normal. All such and other related symptoms can become severe in nature. It is not yet over and there is a long list of symptoms to be discussed at length.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) makes its patients slow to react while they are trying to get from the morning sleep. Some also develop a tendency to eat more and above than the required portion. Weight gain is obvious in such cases. In a far more convincing way, patients lose interest in various activities and withdraw itself from family and society at large. Such candidates find it extremely hard to finish the given task or to do it efficiently. Several health administrating agencies have come to a conclusion that it is sub-category or sub-part of Major Depressive Disorder.

There are number of treatment patterns available here to cure the disease. Bright light therapy has brought noticeable amount of success. During the treatment, patient is supposed to sit at specific distance from the source of light. The critical aspect is that he or she should not look directly into the object. Light therapy is about making the patient sit outside in the sun. The constructive role of vitamin D has also come under suspicion on various fronts. Few medical experts have not been able to find any sort of connection available here. Effective antidepressants like fluoxetine and paroxetine etc have proved to be decisive in the battle against seasonal affective disorder. Chances have also been made clear by science professionals that people suffering from the disease may gather hypomania during summer season.

People who suffer from serious mood change at the start of new season should try to take the services of a medical expert. The situation might not be severe but do we need to wait for it to be. Few precautionary measures and righteous approach towards our health system can easily make the underlying difference. The need is to take the step first and let health flow to all parts of the body.
